Learn to Balance The Job Search Equation by Kenneth L. Meyer

People must learn that when it comes to job search answering any "public" form of ad is almost always a big waste of time.

Ninety, that is 90% of America's hiring is NEVER advertised. This article will intorduce you to the idea of "balancing" the job search equation.

These are extremely difficult times; we are in a depression if you ask me. Well regardless of how bad (or for that matter how good) the times are; if you're looking for a job and all you do is answer want ads of one kind or another you will be very frustrated.

It has always been that way. "Why?" you may ask; I mean look at all the thousands upon thousands of want ads all over the place! Right you are but why are these ads there in the first place? That is a better question.

Human Nature Has Not Changed The vast majority of all those want ads are there because those responsible for placing those ads DID NOT ALREADY KNOW OF SOMEONE WHO THEY TRUSTED TO DO THE JOB!! No matter how difficult times become or no matther how good times are, human nature has not changed. Just ask yourself this, if you were going to hire someone do you really want to talk to hundreds perhaps even thousands of people you have never met in your life? Well, do you really? Of course not! Now ask yourself this, if you already knew of someone, or maybe two or three folks that could do the job why would you not want to check them out first?

A Bird in The Hand Is Still Worth More!

This is the core of all hiring. Humans always hire people they ALREADY know and TRUST before they will hire folks they've never met before.

Ask yourself, would you do any different?

More Behind The Scenes

If you are thinking, "well I've had good results by answering want ads before..." well that is fine. The reality is that your results could have been even better if you had become the best networker you could possibly have become, and then added networking to your public job search!

Or to put it another way, if job seekers would learn and then concentrate on networking they will find what they want sooner regardless of the economic times.

Why Will You Get Hired?

You will get hired because someone believes you are bringing greater value to what they do than someone else. That is it. Now if you think about that, someone who ALREADY knows you and what you bring is more likely to want to hire you than they are to waste time talking with folks who do not bring the value you do.

Balance The Equation With Networking

So, do both. A public job search, answering want ads job search as you are probably used to doing; just add and relying upon, the private, behind the scenes job search with people already working at what you want to do.

In later artilces I'll show you all the details of putting the public job search together with the private job search. But for right now, just think about everyone you know and who they might know. That exercise might make you crazy, so it is better to believe that people you know may know others who are in the field you want to be in. That is how you begin the private job search. Again, the heart and soul of really finding work that is you is by understanding that people always hire people they already know about and trust to do the job BEFORE they even consider talking with people they have never met.

In addition, no matter what you do, either answer want ads in papers, use the internet to find all the "monster" want-to-bes of the world to going to job fairs, etc....you are still doing a public job search only and that will just not pay off for most folks because you are working against human nature; it is counter-intuitive to only hire from a group of candidates you've never seen before in your life IF you already know of someone who could do the job.
